About the library

A room tone library of natural interior ambience recorded in real rooms, from hotel rooms and bedrooms to attics, kitchens and castle halls. Each recording is labelled by window condition, so you can choose how much of the outside world enters the room — useful for dialogue editing, film sound, sound design and post-production.

All files are embedded with UCS-compliant metadata, with simplified Open Tier research for Soundminer users.

Recording Story

These recordings were captured indoors only, during travels and everyday moments. Rather than documenting a single place, the collection gathers the quiet acoustic character and background presence of many different rooms.

Behind the air of each space you may hear ventilation or refrigerator hum, distant traffic and city rumble, voices and footsteps, birds, rain, thunder and wind, creaking wood and doors, water drops, distant music or bells.

Recordings are organized by location, and each file notes whether the window was closed, half open or open. That makes it easy to pick a room tone both for the acoustic character of the space and for the amount of exterior sound it lets in. The descriptions follow the UCS naming convention and are explained further in our guide to sound metadata.

The library mixes Stereo, LRC and 5.0 Surround recordings; not every room is available in every format. Channel layouts are documented per file — see our introduction to multichannel WAV files.

Use them to fill dialogue edits, smooth transitions, build seamless backgrounds, add realistic interior ambience or recreate the atmosphere of a location in film, video and post-production work. The full collection is available as General Room Tones on A Sound Effect.
