Sonic Exploration of Kyoto : Immersion in the Heart of a Japanese City
For this new immersive audio adventure, I traveled across the globe to capture the sonic essence of Kyoto, Japan. The goal? To explore this fascinating city using a specially optimized 5.0 surround sound recording system designed to capture the unique Japanese soundscape.
Several adjustments were made to the system for this project. I installed a custom cable with braided connectors on the microphone side, reducing unwanted noise. Additionally, the microphones were mounted on Cosi suspensions by Cinela. These specialized mounts not only simplified the setup process but also provided ideal protection for the short microphones from Sennheiser’s 8000 series, known for their precision in high-quality audio capture.
Given the mobile nature of this project, it was essential to have a compact, lightweight setup. For my specific sound recording needs, I commissioned a custom-made ProtoGear bag, small enough to fit in a backpack. This choice enhanced my mobility, allowing me to carry the entire setup in a small yet highly functional backpack, ideal for travel and urban exploration.
Unique Sound Recording Experience in the Streets of Kyoto
Once the system was set up, disassembling and reassembling it repeatedly proved challenging. I decided to carry the device by hand through Kyoto’s streets, stopping to record whenever a location’s atmosphere inspired me. Setting up the surround sound system took about ten minutes, as did disassembly. I navigated different neighborhoods, setting up and taking down the system as I gathered enough material, and moved between areas by bicycle, exploring Kyoto with ease and tranquility.
This sonic expedition provided me with a one-of-a-kind immersive experience : discovering Kyoto through the lens of surround sound recording unveiled new dimensions of the city. The calm and serenity that permeates Kyoto are striking, and each captured sound reflects the authenticity of this atmosphere.
